Wendy Rayner as Sister Berthe & Frau Schmidt

It wouldn’t be an Emma Knights show without Wendy Rayner and the depth of commitment she brings to her work. A former Mother Abbess, she is reprising the role of the somewhat stern Sister Berthe, a role I was privileged to work opposite her in several years ago. Not happy just to rest on her laurels, though, Wendy is also taking on the role of Frau Schmidt, the housekeeper, in this production.

Wendy loves a challenge, and says of The Sound of Music that while it is a well-known and loved family favourite, it portrays a very difficult time in our history. We need to make the characters and their relationships very real, so that the audience can connect with the Von Trapps and their community.

Wendy first saw The Sound of Music when the film was released, and though she says her version of “Climb Every Mountain” as 9-year-old “probably dislodged a few sheets of roofing iron on our house”, “Edelweiss” is the song that makes her tear up every single time.
